For this great price, the One Night Only Rod Stewart Live At Royal Albert Hall Dvd is highly recommended and is a regular choice for most people. BMG Music have included some great touches and this means great value.
Rod Stewart's numerous incarnations--Rod the Mod, Rod the Rocker, Rod the Crooner, and so on--are on show on Live at Royal Albert Hall. In what amounts to a 90-moment singalong with his adoring enthusiasts, the raw-voiced singer (now huskier than at any time) reprises choices from all through his long and fruitful vocation, from his early '70s solo albums, like the very best of the great deal, 1971's Each Image Tells a Story, through his surprisingly skillful (and productive) new millennium emergence as an interpreter of the Great American Songbook. Despite his getting introduced a few CDs of expectations by the time of this good-hunting, great-sounding concert, only five of the 17 tunes arrive from them, like a version of "As Time Goes By" with Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders (lush orchestration notwithstanding, there is no disguising the simple fact that each singers are more at home singing rock or pop than jazz, massive band, or cabaret materials). A lot more emphasis is set on early Stewart materials like "You Wear It Properly", "Cause to Imagine", and "Maggie Could" tracks that were and are fantastically limned by acoustic guitars, violin, and mandolin. Very good buddy, previous bandmate (in the Faces and the Jeff Beck Group), and present Rolling Stone Ron Timber plays guitar on a few of numbers (like a raucous "Keep with Me"), and while Stewart does insist on providing "Sizzling Legs" a spin, at the age of 59 he at least has the good feeling to keep "Do Ya Assume I am Alluring" beneath wraps. A temporary tour documentary is the principal DVD reward characteristic. --Sam Graham
