Manufacturer Description

A patchy selection, but by some means all the more exciting due to the fact of it, Fly On the Wall is practically exactingly thorough in correlating all of Paul Weller's solo career B-sides onto 3 CDs (a few are living cuts are absent) and also serves as a worrying reminder of how much the songs customer--and more importantly the musician--may stand to eliminate if the single format at any time gets a factor of the previous.

Sometimes unfairly maligned (and sometimes not) the B-aspect is the musician's possibility for a little friendly informality or hopelessly misguided experimentation, probably even a chance to fulfil that long-cherished ambition to remix one's largest hit in an acid-home design with Acker Bilk and a troupe of Senegalese drummers. Weller hasn't gone that far, but he's absolutely sport--Portishead's "pots and pans" drum sounds on "Wild Wood" now audio a little antiquated but it really is a refreshing slant on a single of his best tunes even though, a lot less successfully, the Lynch Mob Reward Beats remix of "Kosmos" is akin to getting boxed about the ears by an army of amusement arcade devices. Fly on the Wall does include an awful great deal of instrumentals (much in the way of funky grooving, wah-wah-pedals and hysterical saxophonists but, alas, precious little in the way of pithy tunes), but these are counter-well balanced by a generous part of proper tunes which may effectively have merited promotion to the position of album monitor. And by no means a single to shirk from sporting his influences on his sleeve (and relying on your viewpoint, this is both Weller's strength or his Achilles heel), the third disc is offered more than to some fully respectful and altogether more rockier cover versions of classics from Lennon, the Beatles, Sonny Bono, Bob Dylan, Tim Hardin and Neil Young. There is certainly one thing sound below for Weller supporters of all persuasions. --Kevin Maidment
